About This Project

Gabion: a wirework container filled with rock, or other material, used in the construction of dams, retaining walls, etc.

In an effort to avoid a standard concrete block wall we discovered the use of gabions.  Empty wire baskets allowed for a multitude of choices as to design, function, and material to fill it with creating a unique look.  In the function of a retaining wall it efficiently becomes a vertical and horizontal stream in a sense thus effectively managing water runoff and issues.  With some reinforcement gabions can be fences, barricades, and yes they can even become a mailbox stand.  Using them as a retaining wall in a sloped front yard gained more usable space and curving it along an inviting concrete walkway created a place for planters and the water feature.  The water feature is made from steel plate which is bent and welded to fit the space, then left to rust some before sealing it for a certain look.  The troughs cascade down along the stepped concrete landings back to the sidewalk.
